STEP 2 - Develop Your Workplace Drug & Alcohol Policy

All workplaces MUST have a drug and alcohol policy in place to legally allow them to conduct drug and alcohol testing on employees.

Now you are trained you have all of the knowledge to write a comprehensive drug and alcohol testing policy for your workplace.

Once your policy is written, have your management/ legal team approve it and then ensure all employees are educated about the policy prior to implementation.

It is recommended to have all employees sign off their understanding of the policy and for everyone to have a chance to declare to the HR dept any medications prescribed by their doctor.

You may also wish to have a Q&A session with staff where they can ask questions about the new policy.

STEP 3 - Choose the Right Drug & Alcohol Testing Equipment

Reliable drug and alcohol testing equipment makes workplace testing faster, easier and more accurate. High-quality tests provide clear results, reduce repeat testing and help you test with confidence.

Now you have your policy in place you are ready to select the correct urine & saliva drug testing equipment and even a breathalyser for alcohol testing.

Your workplace policy will determine whether you require urine drug tests, saliva drug tests, or both. Many workplaces start with a standard 6-drug test, while safety-sensitive industries often choose more comprehensive tests that detect additional drugs such as Ketamine, Synthetic Marijuana and Benzodiazepines.

You'll also need the right testing accessories, including chain of custody forms, laboratory confirmation kits and specimen collection supplies, together with a quality breathalyser for alcohol testing.

STEP 5 - Set-up a Laboratory Account for Confirmation Tests

While drug screening devices provide rapid on-site results, any non-negative result that may lead to disciplinary action or other employment decisions should be confirmed by a NATA-accredited laboratory. Establishing a laboratory account before you begin workplace testing ensures you have a clear process in place for sending specimens for confirmatory analysis when required.

Having a laboratory account ready also means you'll have access to chain of custody documentation, expert support and legally defensible confirmation results, giving your organisation confidence that every non-negative result is managed professionally and in accordance with workplace best practice.

We've put together a list of the main laboratories in each state. Call and ask for the Toxicology Dept, explain you need to set up and account for your onsite drug testing confirmation testing. Accounts can usually be set up within 1 week.
