keep ahead of the latest synthetic marijuana trend

Why test for K3 - AB-Pinaca in the Workplace?

K3 synthetic marijuana (including AB-PINACA compounds) is a growing concern in Australia, often used as a cannabis alternative to avoid detection in standard drug testing.
Use is increasing across a wide range of users due to its accessibility and “legal high” perception. Effects include agitation, hallucinations, confusion, and loss of coordination.

It poses serious safety risks in safety-critical environments where clear judgment and reaction time are essential.
As it is not detected by traditional drug screens, this creates a significant blind spot in many workplace drug testing programs.

The Eco 7 Advanced Urine Drug Test now includes K3 synthetic cannabinoid (AB-PINACA) detection as standard—giving employers a powerful edge in identifying emerging drug threats and closing critical gaps in workplace testing.

Product Benefits

Effortless Collection

A convenient all-in-one urine drug test cup designed for simple, efficient use. Just unscrew the lid, collect a 30-70ml urine sample, and securely recap. The integrated test strips activate automatically, with urine migrating up the strips to deliver fast, reliable results in approximately 30 seconds.

Rapid, Easy-to Read Drug Test Results

Peel back the privacy strip to reveal the test result lines. Clear, easy-to-read results develop within 1–2 minutes. Each drug class is colour-coded for rapid identification, while built-in control lines confirm proper sample flow and test validity.

Specimen Integrity is Maintained

Integrated specimen integrity checks help verify sample authenticity and reliability. The temperature strip confirms the sample is within the expected ‘body’ temperature range at the time of collection, while built-in adulterant tests detect dilution or the presence of masking agents.

6 Drugs Per Australian Standard AS4308:2023 plus K3 (Synthetic Marijuana)

The device screens for the six essential drug groups specified under AS4308:2023, plus now includes K3 (AB-Pinaca), the latest version of Synthetic Marijuana in Australia. This comprehensive combination ensures you cover emerging drugs.

Integrated HydraCheck™ Technology

Stay ahead of hidden workplace risks with built-in hydration screening. The integrated HydraCheck feature provides instant insight into a donor’s hydration status—helping you identify potential dehydration before it impacts safety, performance, or compliance in high-risk environments.

What is the HydraCheck™ Hydration test and how does it work?

The Onsite Eco 6 Advanced Urine Drug Screen Test includes HydraCheck instant hydration test to analyse the hydration status of the donor.

Dehydration is a common and often underestimated risk in many Australian workplaces, particularly in high-temperature, outdoor, or physically demanding environments. Even mild dehydration can impair concentration, slow reaction times, and increase the likelihood of errors, incidents, and workplace injuries. In more severe cases, it can lead to heat stress, fatigue, and serious health complications. By incorporating hydration screening into your drug testing process, employers can take a proactive approach to worker safety—identifying at-risk individuals early and reinforcing the importance of proper hydration as part of a broader workplace health and safety program

By checking the pH and Specific Gravity levels of the donor you can determine whether the employee is well hydrated or dehydrated. Simply compare the pH and S.G. colour swabs against the colour chart provided to determine the hydration status. Should the donor be over-hydrated this may also indicate a situation of flushing of the body/kidneys of drugs prior to testing.

The Onsite Eco 6 Advanced Cup includes 3 adulterants: Creatinine (CRE), Specific Gravity (S.G.) and pH.

Drug test lines interpretation

Interpretation of Test Lines

The ‘presence’ of the Test line and Control line indicates a negative drug test result.

The ‘absence’ of the Test line and presence of only the Control line indicates a presumptive positive drug test result (non-negative).

If a Control line fails to appear the drug test result is invalid and the test will need to be repeated.

How to perform a Urine Drug Test

Performing a urine drug test is simple and easy

Prepare the Drug Test Kit – Ensure the test kit is at room temperature and ready for use.

Collect the Urine Sample – Have the donor fill the urine drug test cup between 30-70ml. Replace and tighten the lid and hand the drug test cup back to the collector.

Check Specimen Integrity – check the Temp strip and then remove the privacy strip to check the Adulterants are in the correct range for a normal urine sample. If so, proceed to interpret the drug test results.

Results Appear – Within 1-2 minutes, drug test results appear as lines on the test panel, indicating the presence or absence of drugs.

Interpret the Drug Test Results – Compare the drug test test lines to the interpretation chart in the provided instructions. A control line must always appear for the drug test to be valid.

Record and Dispose – Record the results and properly dispose of the used drug test kit according to guidelines.

Laboratory confirmation may be required for non-negative results.

·  Study from anywhere in Australia with online learning and posted practical materials.

·  Learn from experienced workplace drug and alcohol testing professionals.

·  Flexible assessment options to suit individual students and workplaces.

Delivered by Onsite Diagnostics Pty Ltd (RTO 91700), this course equips participants with the practical skills required for urine and oral fluid specimen collection, conduct breath alcohol testing, and manage legally defensible workplace drug testing programs.

This training aligns with Australian Standards AS/NZS 4308:2023 and AS/NZS 4760:2019, ensuring specimen collection procedures meet workplace compliance and chain-of-custody requirements.

Collection Method:
Saliva Testing: Involves swabbing the mouth, which is non-invasive and can be conducted quickly under direct supervision.

Urine Testing: Requires the donor to provide a urine sample in a controlled environment, which may involve more complex collection protocols to ensure sample integrity.

Detection Window:
Saliva Testing: Generally detects recent drug use, typically within a few hours up to a day, making it useful for identifying current impairment.

Urine Testing: Can detect drug metabolites for several days after use, offering a broader window for identifying past substance use.

Risk of Adulteration:
Saliva Testing: The collection process is more easily supervised, reducing the risk of sample adulteration.

Urine Testing: Although often observed, urine samples can be more susceptible to tampering or adulteration if proper protocols are not followed.

Each method has its advantages depending on the specific requirements of the testing program, such as the need for rapid on-site results or a longer detection period.

Yes, it is highly recommended that your company has a clear and well-documented drug and alcohol policy before testing employees. Here’s why:

1. Legal Compliance

A policy ensures that drug and alcohol testing aligns with workplace laws, privacy regulations, and industry standards. In Australia, workplace drug testing must comply with Fair Work Act provisions and relevant work health and safety (WHS) laws.

2. Employee Awareness & Fairness

A formal policy informs employees about testing procedures, expectations, and consequences of positive results.

It prevents disputes by ensuring consistency and transparency in testing practices.

3. Protects Against Legal Challenges

Without a policy, employees may challenge test results, disciplinary actions, or termination decisions.

A well-structured policy helps defend the company against unfair dismissal claims.

4. Defines Testing Procedures

Specifies who, when, and how testing will be conducted (e.g., pre-employment, random, post-incident).

Outlines the types of tests used (saliva, urine) and the handling of results.

5. Supports a Safe & Productive Workplace

Reinforces a commitment to safety, reducing risks of accidents caused by impairment.

Encourages a culture of accountability and responsibility among employees.

You must designate an employee at your workplace to be trained as a 'Collector.' This individual must complete the Nationally Accredited Course HLTPAT010 – Collect Specimens for Drugs of Abuse Testing, which involves 5-6 hours of training through distance or online study. Onsite Diagnostics Pty Ltd (RTO#91700) is a Registered Training Organisation that offers this course and provides continual support after completion of the course.

Note: Australian Standards 4760:2019 & 4308:2023 state that the collector must have successfully completed a course of instruction in compliance with these Standards and received a Statement of Attainment in accordance with the Australian Quality Training Framework.

Drug tests should be stored properly to ensure their accuracy and longevity. Follow these guidelines:

  • Temperature: Store at room temperature (2°C – 30°C). Avoid extreme heat or cold.
  • Humidity: Keep in a dry environment, away from moisture or humidity.
  • Light Exposure: Store away from direct sunlight to prevent degradation.
  • Sealing: Keep test kits sealed in their original packaging until use to maintain integrity.
  • Expiration Check: Regularly check expiration dates and avoid using expired tests.
  • Secure Storage: Store in a secure location to prevent tampering or unauthorised access.

Yes, if you receive a non-negative drug test result in Australia, the specimen should be sent to a National Association of Testing Authorities (NATA)-accredited laboratory for confirmatory testing. This ensures accurate and legally defensible results through Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry (GC-MS) or Liquid Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry (LC-MS) analysis.

Your workplace drug and alcohol policy should outline the correct procedure for handling non-negative results, including chain-of-custody protocols to maintain sample integrity. If you need assistance with laboratory referrals, please contact us on 1300 667 107.
